
Pathways App
Painaustralia is proud to support and endorse the Pathways App and the 11-module Pathways to Pain Management program providing the community with an immediately accessible, practical tool that supports patients and clinicians alike – you can either use it yourself directly or through your health clinician.
The app is designed to give people living with chronic pain, free access to structured, evidence-based education (Step 1 of our 4-Step model).
The Pathways to Pain Management program is structured into eleven modules:
- Understanding Pain – Pain science, biopsychosocial model, active vs passive care
- Medications for Pain – Medication types, safety, side effects, deprescribing (optional consultation with a pharmacist)
- Optimising Sleep – Sleep hygiene, relaxation techniques, therapeutic recreation (optional consultation with a sleep consultant)
- The Mind-Body Connection – Emotions, stress, trauma, mental health, nervous system regulation (optional consultation with a psychologist)
- Nutrition for Pain Management – Anti-inflammatory nutrition, energy, gut health (optional consultation with a dietitian/nutritionist)
- Reconditioning the Body – Early movement, body awareness, pacing, rebuilding confidence (optional consultation with a physiotherapist)
- Integrating Movement (Function) – Functional goals, daily routines, meaningful activity (optional consultation with an occupational therapist)
- Integrating Movement (Capacity) – Graded exercise, endurance, strength, confidence in movement (optional consultation with an exercise physiologist)
- Complementary Physical Therapies – Overview of massage, acupuncture, Tai Chi, and similar approaches
- Recreation and Vocation – Engaging in meaningful activity, return to leisure, work, or volunteering
- Procedure-Based Interventions – Overview of surgical, interventional, or specialist options
Note: The optional consultations listed in Modules 2–8 form Step 2 in the program and carry a fee. These are designed to provide safe, supported pathways into multidisciplinary care when required.
Painaustralia is working with Pain Education and Management to constantly refine and develop content in the app and in partnership will be providing feedback on the app’s evolving content focusing on education and provision of a pathway for patients and clinicians to engage with this important resource.
