International Dementia Conference 2020 – Care in the Age of Outrage
On 21 September, CEO Carol Bennett joined Dr Jennifer Abbey AM and Philip Daffas, CEO of PainChek, to present on pain and COVID-19 on the opening day of the International Dementia Conference 2020 – Care in the Age of Outrage.
The presentation highlighted the prevalence of pain among older Australians, and how it can go largely undetected particularly among people with dementia. With the COVID-19 pandemic, the Federal Government has extended a funded national trial of PainChek in Australian residential aged care to help staff detect and manage pain in residents with conditions, such as dementia, who find it difficult to communicate.
An important way to improve quality of life for people with chronic pain is through better recognition and identification of pain.

Parliamentary Friends of Palliative Care
Painaustralia was pleased to join the Parliamentary Friends of Palliative Care event hosted by Palliative Care Australia. The conversation was led by Norman Swan and included HammondCare CEO, Mike Baird AO, Older Persons Advocacy Network CEO, Craig Gear OAM, Professor Deborah Parker, Professor of Aged Care (Dementia) at the University of Technology Sydney and PCA Chair, Professor Meera Agar.
We share similar goals for the treatment and quality of care for older Australians, and this is a particularly important as a growing number of our ageing population face chronic illnesses.
It was encouraging to see Palliative Care Australia’s eight-point plan, called Palli8, emphasising the importance of adopting patient-centred and holistic care.
The full Palli8 plan can be viewed here.
